Subject
The
subject is the mosque at Djenne in Mali, which the sculptor visited
in 1993.
The mosque is an adobe structure built in 1907. The distinguishing
feature of the mosque is that every face is unique, and does not
relate to the image of the whole.
Object
The
aim of the sculpture is to recreate the placement of the mosque
in the courtyard, which serves as the weekly marketplace.
During the sculptor's visit to the mosque, it was closed to all
non-Muslims. Therefore, the form is presented as both accessible
and yet inaccessible at the same time. |
